Israel strikes kill 11 in central Beirut, 19 across Gaza

Eleven people were killed and 63 injured in an Israeli strike on central Beirut early on Saturday, as rescue operations continued hours after a residential building was razed.

On Saturday morning, AFP footage showed an excavator removing the rubble of the eight-storey building hit at around 04:00 AM (0200 GMT), with a fire truck and civil defence rescuers nearby while people gathered around the site.

There was no evacuation warning from the Israeli military for the Basta area.

The National National Agency (NNA) also reported that Israeli jets launched six missiles at the building in the working-class Basta neighbourhood causing “widespread destruction in buildings” nearby.

Later on Saturday morning, Israeli strikes also hit southern Beirut’s suburbs, particularly around the Hadath area and the Lebanese University, state media said.

Meanwhile in Gaza, Israeli strikes killed at least 19 people, some of them children, across the territory on Saturday.

“More than 40 others wounded in three massacres caused by Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip between midnight and this morning”, Mahmud Bassal, the civil defence spokesperson told AFP.
