An AI-generated video showing an imagined ‘Gaza Riviera‘ shared by US President Donald Trump on social media has been met with confusion and anger by his supporters.
The clip, forwarded by the US president on his Truth Social account on Tuesday, is a montage of bizarre scenes depicting an idyllic future Gaza featuring skyscrapers, beach resorts, luxury limousines, and superyachts.
The video features images of bearded belly dancers, a giant Kim Il Sung-esque statue of Trump, and Elon Musk making it rain over groups of applauding tourists.
The clip closes with a shot of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drinking cocktails semi-naked next to a swimming pool.
Trump sparked outrage last month after he announced plans for the US to “take over” Gaza and expel the Palestinians as part of plans to reconstruct the shattered territory as the “Riviera of the Middle East”.
His comments were condemned around the world as a proposal for ethnic cleansing, and Arab countries are racing to agree on a rival reconstruction plan and ward off a potential US intervention in the conflict.
The reaction to the video from Truth Social’s pro-Trump followers was overwhelmingly negative, with thousands of people calling on the president to delete the video within hours of it being posted.
Some users voiced sympathy for Palestinians and the wider Middle East.
“What sort of sick ad is this?!” asked one user.
“I have been behind you Trump, but this inspiration of a golden God-like statue of you, standing in a metropolis built on the graves of tens of thousands of murdered (mostly) children and women is SICK.”
“You should remove this video and apologise to the Palestinians, and the good people of the world who’ve watched the genocide for over a year.”
“Posting this demeans you as a human being, as the President of our country, and all of us the American people,” wrote another. “Moreover, it humiliates and degrades all the peoples of the Middle East. It’s shameful and depraved.”
Others voiced religious objections.
“How horrible! The golden statue is frightening. Reminds me of the Antichrist. Please don’t forget that this is not pleasing to God,” one user wrote.
Another wrote: “This feels all wrong and actually makes me sick. I have supported you since Day 1 but this is filth. There is no God in this.”
Some users asked how another US intervention in the Middle East would fit with Trump’s ‘America First’ agenda.
“I get that your [sic] trolling but please stop with this bulls**t and focus on the America first agenda you campaigned on. No one voted to make Gaza great again,” one wrote.
