Turkey will be launching its own GPS and map application system in an effort to reduce dependence on foreign strategic technologies and infrastructure, according to a report on Monday.

State-run news agency Anadolu reported that Turkey will be establishing a Regional Positioning and Timing System (BKZS) to launch the new endeavour and seeks to maintain cybersecurity of the system.

The BKZS will allow Turkey to provide precise data on locations using its own satellites, offering an alternative to other international systems, such as the widely used GPS.

The planned move is to allow Turkey to be a more significant player when it comes to digital transformation and to allow the system to be used for military operation purposes as well as to enhance civilian communication, transport systems and precision agricultural applications.

To launch the map application system, Turkey will undertake key steps, including a pre-feasibility study, atomic clock development, satellite-based augmentation system studies and a regional satellite positioning system.

The development of such a system will further allow Turkey to increase its technological independence and data security, reports in local media state, in turn bringing forth further economic benefits to the country and allowing entrepreneurs in the industry to thrive.

Reports state Turkey is also working on domestic alternatives to search engines and social media platforms, with each new project being tailored to meet the country’s needs and taking into consideration its population and infrastructure.
