Israeli forces shot and injured a Palestinian woman in Jenin on Wednesday, as a month-long siege on the West Bank city continues with thousands still displaced from their homes.

Local Palestinian media reported that a woman in her 50s was shot in her chest and injured by Israeli troops in Jenin, which has been the focus of a sustained Israeli assault that has killed 26 people and made thousands of families homeless.

The shooting happened outside the Jenin refugee camp, which has been emptied of 90 percent of its population over the past month due to Israeli aggression.

It came as Palestinian residents of the camp were turned back by Israeli forces at the entrance to the neighbourhood, many of whom were forced to leave behind essential goods, despite coordination with Israeli occupation authorities to allow them access to their homes.

Israeli bulldozers have rampaged through the city, making life unliveable for the remaining population, with an estimated 470 homes in the Jenin refugee camp destroyed or partially damaged leaving around 3,000 families without shelter.

Jenin Mayor Muhammad Jarrar told WAFA news agency that the destruction of civilian infrastructure is a deliberate attempt by Israel to make the camp uninhabitable.

Around 20,000 Jenin refugee camp residents have been forced to flee their homes due to Israel’s military operation in the West Bank, which has killed a total of 55 people since 21 January, according to Anadolu Agency.

Meanwhile, Israel this week approved the construction of 1,000 new settler units near Bethlehem. Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are considered illegal under international law.
