Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa warned the UN over rising Islamophobia [UN]

Islamophobia stands as one of the most disturbing forms of hate speech globally, Secretary-General of the Muslim World League (MWL) Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa said on Friday.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly on the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, Al-Issa warned about the growing threat that anti-Muslim sentiment poses to global coexistence.

In his keynote address, the MWL chief called out the broader implications of Islamophobia, not only as an affront to Muslims but as a catalyst for social division and extremism.

He told the assembly that the prejudice against the currently two million Muslims worldwide undermines the values of inclusive citizenship, which are enshrined in democratic constitutions and international human rights principles.

He also pointed out a concerning increase in incidents of discrimination, including marginalisation and denial of basic rights, affecting millions of Muslims worldwide.

“When we speak from this international platform, we are not only defending Islam but also defending humanitarian principles,” Sheikh Al-Issa said.

“Therefore, we say: ‘No’ to making followers of religions the target of hatred, racism, categorization, and exclusion. ‘No’ to election slogans that incite hatred. ‘No’ to those who sow fear to reap votes. ‘No’ to policies that build their future on fear and division. ‘No’ to media that fuels racism,” he said.

“‘No’ to platforms that promote discord. ‘No’ to lies that distort facts. ‘No’ to linking terrorism to a religion embraced by nearly two billion people. ‘No’ to extremists who hijack religion and terrorism that distorts the true nature of religion and to those who refuse to see the truth.”

The MWL leader called for an end to policies and rhetoric that sow “fear and division” and urged the international community to promote tolerance and understanding. He called on educational and cultural institutions to play a pivotal role in fostering these values.

In his visit, Al-Issa held bilateral talks with UN General Assembly President Philemon Yang, discussing the rise in anti-Muslim sentiment and other issues of mutual concern.

Following his speech, representatives from various UN member states outlined their governments’ efforts to combat Islamophobia.
