Arab summit in Cairo convenes for Gaza’s post-war future

An Arab League summit is set to convene in the Egyptian capital Cairo on Tuesday in a bid to adopt a political and reconstruction plan for post-war Gaza.

The summit, which will begin at 3pm local time, will provide a response to US President Donald Trump’s displacement plan announced in February which was staunchly rebuffed by the region.

The summit comes after Israel reimposed a blockade on Gaza during on the second day of Ramadan in a bid to pressure Hamas to accepting an extension of phase one of the ceasefire, a policy which has been labelled “collective punishment” by aid agencies.

Some two million people in Gaza, most of whom are displaced from their homes, are reliant on the entry of humanitarian aid into the enclave.

Meanwhile Israel’s assault on the occupied West Bank continues, with raids on the northern city of Jenin, where one person was killed, Tulkarem, Hebron, and Bethlehem.
