Hundreds of Moroccans on Friday protested the participation of an Israeli minister at a conference in Marrakech earlier this week.

Israeli Transport Minister Miri Regev attended the Fourth Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety on Tuesday and Wednesday, prompting an angry reaction from the Moroccan public.

Many Moroccans have called on their government to cut ties with Israel which were established in Decmeber 2020 as part of the controversial Abraham Accords.

These protests have increased dramatically since Israel’s horrific war on Gaza started in October 2023.

The Friday protests were organised by the Moroccan Commission for Advocating the Nation’s Causes and the National Action Group for Palestine.

The demonstrators said Regev’s visit was a provocation to the Moroccan people amid ongoing Israeli violations against the Palestinians.

Protests took place in the cities of Ait Melloul, Meknes and the capital Rabat.

Those taking part chanted anti-Israel slogans and voiced their support for Gaza, particularly in light of US President Donald Trump’s proposal to displace the Palestinian territory’s inhabitants and move them to | Egypt and Jordan.

Arab states are preparing a counterplan to Trump’s proposal, which would in phases see the reconstruction of Gaza and a two-state solution, but some disagreements over disarming Hamas and the rebuilding process remain.

A fragile ceasefire has held between Hamas and Israel. Both sides have continued to swap captives for Palestinian prisoners and detainees, with the latest exchange being on Saturday.

More than 61,000 people were killed in Israel’s war on Gaza according to the territory’s health ministry, mostly women and children.
