US President Donald Trump is set to issue a sweeping entry ban against numerous countries, resuming those imposed during his first term in 2017.

Although a final list has yet to be released, reports have emerged revealing several countries that could be included in the ban and what new system will regulate it.

The New Arab takes a look at the three tiers which countries are set to be placed on, and which countries are likely to be affected by the ban.

Colour tier system

The upcoming ban, which was given the green light for preparation following his inauguration on 20 January, is set to have three tiers under the colours: red, orange and yellow.

The red tier will be a total ban of the entry of citizens from countries set to be on the list, while the orange list would be a partial ban.

This would mean that only certain types of visas would be issued to countries on the list, such as business visas for affluent people, according to The New York Times, which added that immigrant or tourist visas would not be issued.

Additionally, visa lengths would be shortened for this tier and applicants would have to conduct in-person interviews.

The last tier is the yellow tier, which would allow countries listed 60 days to change deficiencies before being added to one of the previous two lists.

This allegedly includes failure to share information about incoming travellers, inadequate security measures for passport issuance and selling citizenship to those from banned countries.

Listed countries

Several countries are set to be listed on the red tier, with officials suggesting that they largely include nations which were previously banned.

This includes Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen, according to the report.

Afghanistan is also set to be included in the red tier, while Pakistan may either be placed on the red or the orange tier.

The announcement from the state department on the full list is expected by next week, as that would be the end of the 60 days given by Trump to the State Department to compile the list.
