Outgoing US President Joe Biden made a series of blunders on Wednesday during his address on the Gaza ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Â
The 82-year-old leader stumbled multiple times while discussing the US-Qatari-Egyptian-mediated deal, aimed at ending Israel’s brutal war on Gaza.Â
During the speech, Biden mistakenly referred to the “emir of Kuwait” when he apparently meant the emir of Qatar. Â
He also misidentified his national security adviser Jake Sullivan as “secretary” and incorrectly stated that Hezbollah, rather than Hamas, was responsible for the 7 October attack on Israel.
The errors were noticed on social media, with commentators expressing frustration over Biden’s apparent lapses.Â
MENA expert Andreas Krieg took to X to mock the president’s statement, saying: “The Emir of Kuwait probably had more of a hand in the mediation of the deal than Biden.”Â
Another X user criticised the Biden’s administration’s support for Israel, claiming: “Every last Democrat that has defended this for the last four years honestly has blood on their hands. He is not mentally competent to be president.”
Biden was joined by Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the White House to announce the three-phase agreement, first proposed in May 2024. Â
The announcement followed Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani’s confirmation of the deal from Doha.Â
Biden’s incident follows a series of verbal missteps by the retiring president, including a recent remark during a discussion on the US response to California’s wildfires, where he told Vice President Harris to “fire away, no pun intended.”
The repeated gaffes have drawn renewed scrutiny as Biden nears the end of his presidency.Â
Later on Wednesday, Biden delivered his previously scheduled farewell address to the nation, marking the final chapter of his presidency as he prepares to transfer power back to Donald Trump.
The address came just months after Biden’s dramatic exit from the political stage last summer, paving the way for the return of Trump, who Biden defeated in the 2020 presidential election, to the White House.
