Registration now open for the Yiddish summer program in Paris

Views:

The Maison de la Culture Yiddish, located in the heart of Paris, is now accepting applications for its acclaimed summer program to take place from July 7 till July 25.

Mornings will be devoted to formal classes, divided into five levels, emphasizing language skills and, in the more advanced groups, studying literary and historical texts from different periods.

In the afternoons and evenings, the program will include informal cultural activities, such as Yiddish theater, singing, cooking, lectures, tutoring and tours of Paris.

Among the literary works that advanced students will be reading are the Don Quixote theme in Yiddish literature; the writings of the Yiddish author and historian Rokhl Auerbach; the memoirs of  Glikl Hamel, a wealthy Hamburg merchant and businesswoman of the 17th century, and classic Yiddish children’s poetry.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of YIVO Institute for Jewish research, the Paris Yiddish Center will also host three lectures in Yiddish by eminent scholars. Linguist Hershl (Paul) Glasser will speak about the YIVO Philology Department in pre-war Vilnius. Historian David Fishman will discuss YIVO during WWII, and the historian Elissa Bemporad will talk about the Soviet vision for YIVO in the 1920s.
