NEW YORK—World Jewish Congress President
Ronald S. Lauder welcomed the release on Friday of the United Nations Action
Plan to Enhance Monitoring & Response to Antisemitism, presented by
Under-Secretary General Mr. Miguel Ángel Moratinos, who serves as the UN’s High
Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations and UN Focal Point to monitor
antisemitism and enhance a system-wide response.
In a statement, Lauder said:
“We
deeply appreciate the hard work of USG Moratinos and his dedicated staff in
crafting this important and timely document, which outlines the path towards
countering the serious, global threat posed by antisemitism.
“The WJC has worked closely with the UN in the
development of this Action Plan, and we value the genuine cooperation and
willingness of Mr. Moratinos and his team to listen to the voices of Jewish
communities worldwide. The inclusion of Jewish organizations in the process has
been crucial in ensuring that the plan reflects the needs and concerns of those
most affected by antisemitism.
“The implementation of this plan will require
sustained commitment, coordination, and action at all levels of government,
civil society, and international organizations. It is essential that we now
move from planning to concrete measures that protect Jewish communities and
address the root causes of antisemitism that have plagued UN bodies and
member-states.
“The World Jewish Congress is committed to
supporting the work of the United Nations and Secretary-General António
Guterres as it moves to turn this welcomed initiative into meaningful action.”
